 | Dubai Reviews | Tips 1 - 10 of 315 | | | | | | Dubai Marine Beach Resort and Spa (Jumierah Beach Road.): The only 5* beach hotel in the middle of the city!
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
If you're coming to Dubai and planning to spend your holiday on the beach, then there are definitely numerous hotels to choose from. If you are also interested in seeing 'downtown' Dubai, or even just want to indulge in some shopping, it can be quite a drive getting into town, as all of the beach hotels are located faaaar outside the city. And nowadays, the highways are a 24/7 rush-hour - you don't want to spend half your holiday in a traffic jam, do you? That's why I suggest the Dubai Marine Beach Resort & Spa: it's *the* premier independent 5-star hotel & the ideal place to stay. The hotel is located smack-bang in the middle at the beginning of Jumeirah, with a nice small private beach, 2 large swimming pools + kid's pool, great access to the cafes, shops and malls on Jumeirah Beach Road, and quick access into Bur Dubai, to Dubai Creek, etc. There's another long public beach right next to the hotel if you want to go for nice walks in the sand.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION... Here are some of the nearby points of interest & the driving distance: > Palm Strip Shopping Mall - adjacent to the resort. > Jumeirah Mosque - opposite side of the road. > Wild Wadi Water Park - 20 minutes. > Burj Al Arab - 20 minutes. > Gold / Spice Souk - 10 minutes (drive down to Creek, then take 'Abra' (water taxi) across! > Dubai Museum - 15 minutes. > World Trade Centre - 5 minutes. > Mercato Shopping Mall - 2 minutes. The hotel also houses some of Dubai's nicest restaurants & 3 of the hottest** night-spots: CAPANNA NUOVA Italian Restaurant with great outside or inside seating The Award winning THAI BISTRO Restaurant. MALECON Cuban Restaurant & Night Club.** SHO-CHO Japanese Restaurant & Night Club.** EL PASO Tex-Mex Restaurant & bar. | | | | Rydges Plaza Dubai: 4* affordable, central, popular with VT members!
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
This is a great little city hotel of an Australian chain, with friendly staff, a sufficient pool area & loads of other facilities: I think it's pretty good value for your money as well, and in the last 2 years (since 2006) many fellow VTers have stayed here upon my recommendation & agreed with me. The hotel is very safe, as only hotel guests can use one set of elevators by swiping their security card, so no "outsiders" can ascent to the residence floor. The main selling point here is the central location, which is becoming more & more important in the ever-increasing traffic jams of Dubai - no doubt about it. Some nearby attractions/sights are: Satwa Shopping Street: 2-minute walk across the street. The Beach, Al Ittihad House (big flag) & Jumeirah Mosque - 2-minute drive. Mercato Shopping Mall - 5-minute drive. Bur Juman Mall, Museum, Textile Souk & the Creek - 10-minute drive. Deira City Centre, Gold Souk & the airport - 20+-minute drive (well, depending on traffic!) Al Diyafah Street is just a bunny-hop away, with some shops and a mall with internet cafe, but mainly this is "weight-gainers lane": Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut, Arabic bistros, etc. etc. etc.
The hotel also houses some great restaurants & bars. Don't let the size of the hotel fool you: there's a lot to be experienced, tasted & sampled! Aussie Legends - Restaurant & Bar. Il Rustico - Italian Restaurant. Billy Blues - BBQ / Steak Restaurant & Bar. Cactus Cantina - Mexican Restaurant & Bar. Four Seaons - Chinese Restaurant. St Andrews - English Pub. Coconut Grove - Indian Restaurant. (My all-time favourites are Cactus Cantina, Aussie Legends & Coconut Grove) UPDATE MARCH 2008: Smoking is now banned in all of the hotel's restaurants, except Aussie Legends on the Ground floor. | | | | Burj Al Arab (Jumeira Beach Road.): 7 Stars of Luxury... is it really worth it?
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Fine... I know you want to hear about it, so I guess I'm forced to mention it here... I will not tell you "definitely stay in this hotel!" I will also not tell you "Don't stay here!" I will give you the facts & let you decide if the experience is worth the price. The architecture: Yes, it is beautiful. I will admit that the concept behind the idea is lovely: The Jumeirah Beach Hotel represents a wave, the hotel’s conference centre represents a "Dhow" (traditional Arabic boat), and the Burj Al Arab was therefore designed in the shape of a sail. The details & finish in the rooms, bathrooms, restaurants, etc. is amazing: bling-bling! Gold, satin, silk, glitter, you'll need sunglasses. But I find the decor quickly becomes overwhelming, and after the initial shock you can recognise the resemblance of what we know as "overdone, cheesy Arabic interiors". The size: Yes, the hotel is very impressive: at 321 meters high, Burj Al Arab is taller than the Eiffel Tower and only 60 meters shorter than the Empire State Building, and also the fact that it stands on it's own man-built island, so it's reachable by helicopter, boat or by its heavily guarded bridge. The Spa: the hotel itself does not impress me much, but I wouldn't say "no" to a day at the Assawan Spa! For more info on the picture of Andre Agassi & Roger Federer playing tennis on the helipad of the hotel, click here...
It is known as the landmark of Dubai: If you desperately want to see the Burj Al Arab, then go as part of a guided Dubai city tour with one of the many tour operators. Afternoon Tea is offered to non-guests of the hotel every day apart from Fridays. There are 2 options: > The Lobby Lounge, at 3pm or at 5pm. > Al Muntaha Sky View Rest, at 3pm or at 4pm. Prices at the moment (Year 2007) are 280 Dhs per person. (1 US Dollar = 3.67 Dirhams) It is vital that you make a booking in advance. Tel: 00971 - 4 - 301 7600. Wining & Dining: The restaurant at the top of the hotel is called Al Muntaha... great views of the ocean, Palm Island construction & shoreline. A little know fact is that it has been voted Dubai's worst restaurant for 2 consecutive years (!) so I would suggest simply having some drinks in Al Muntaha, enjoying the views & then heading downstairs for food. My mother actually refuses to take her tourist groups there, as so many people have had diarrhea, etc. after dining there. If you wish to have a great meal at the Burj, eat at the Al Mahara Seafood restaurant (it's not a real submarine ride... don't be so gullible). This is the hotel's signature restaurant. MY VERDICT: If you have the cash & absolutely want to stay there for 1 night, go ahead. But please be aware that a stay at the Burj Al Arab is NOT experiencing Dubai. It's nice, but far too "over-the-top" for many of us. In the end, all I want to say is: Sting, Bryan Adams, the Black Eyed Peas, Bill Clinton etc. have been in Dubai before. Non of them have ever stayed in this hotel. The hotel pleaded, the organisers begged, but they have no privacy, no back-doors, no way of hiding unless you stay locked in your suite, and no safe & quick emergency exits... | | | | Grand Hyatt Dubai: 5* Truly GRAND dimensions in the heart of the city
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The majestic Grand Hyatt Dubai is located by the edge of the creek and is set within 37 acres of landscaped gardens. It has the most enormous & beautiful lobby and atrium I have ever seen! The entire lobby has been transformed into a lush rainforest... an unusually large spot of greenery for a desert country. Look up at the ceiling and marvel at the 4 "Dhows" (traditional Arabic boats) that are embedded in the atriums strucutre... simply stunning (click picture to see them). This place is not near the beach, but the lush gardens & huge pool area can easily make up for that. And for all the ultimate, die-hard beach addicts, Jumeirah beach is only a 15-20 minute drive away. The various restaurants here are all very nice, but also very expensive. There are 674 rooms that are everything you'd expect then to be in a 5-star establishment. Everthing from "normal" Creek-facing rooms, to Royal Suites is available here. Accommodation also includes 186 fully serviced apartments for the wealthy long-stay business traveller as well as 10 four-bedroom villas, all of which are available on short or long term lets, depending on your credit card limit...
The hotel is also known for its fine restaurants, which are all quite pricy but definitely worth the money! Some of my favourites include the Peppercrab Seafood restaurant, Andiamo Italian Restaurant and the gorgeous Panini Cafe. TIP: When the hotel first opened they seemed to have a staff-shortage, which resulted in the rooms not being cleaned properly and often enough... I'm not sure if this has been resolved yet, so make sure you have a firm word with house-keeping if they're still slacking! Some nearby attractions: > Wafi City Mall only a 10-minute walk. > Bur Juman Centre 5-minute drive. > Lamcy Plaza Shopping Mall 15-minute walk. > Deira City Centre 10-minute drive. > Dubai Creek 5-minute drive. > Dubai Creek Park 5-minute walk. > Jumeirah Mosque, Jumeirah shopping malls & Beach park 20-minute drive. > You are also relatively CLOSE TO DUBAI AIRPORT. | | | | Oasis Beach Hotel (Dubai.): 4*-star excellence; better & cheaper than the rest
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The Oasis Beach Hotel is one of my firm favourites amongst the numerous hotels in Dubai. It's rated as a 4-star, but the service & ambience easily passes as 5-star. This hotel is very popular with German tourists that may not speak much English: the restaurants menus & signage are in English & German, and many of the staff speak some essential sentences in German as well. Many families stay here, but I would also recommend it to young couples, singles looking to party... basically anyone. They have some lovely restaurants, such as: Bazaar: Based on the theme of an open market place where you can visit various live cooking stations for freshly cooked food, such as pizza and grills, this restaurant is open around the clock serving buffet and a-la-Carte. CHARLIE PARROT's: A lively night-spot for drinks, fun, dancing, live entertainment, daily different themed evenings and fantastic promotions. Check out the cocktails during Happy Hour! TIP 2006-2007: Make sure when booking that you pay that tiny bit extra for a sea-view room. Reason: The "land-view" rooms are currently "construction site-view" rooms of Dubai Marina, with work going on for nearly 24 hours a day. The noise is deafening and you won't get much peace or sleep. But on the ocean-side of the hotel all it peaceful & quiet, as it should be...
The pool is nice & big, with a jacuzzi to one side and a safe little kiddy-pool to the other. An added bonus is the pool-bar, (Dubai's largest swim-up bar!) where you can sit in the water slurping cocktails, nibbling on pool snacks and working on that perfect tan. Beyond the pool is a huge grass area, great for windy days when you don't want to end-up covered in the rather itchy & annoying combination of sunlotion & sand (yuch!) Beyond the grass area is the hotel's private beach, offering different kind of watersports, volleyball nets, camel-rides, showers & life-guards are always on duty. TIP: If you travel to Dubai often or even live in Dubai, apply for a free "Neighbourhood Privilege Card" which entitles you to good discounts on watersports, beachclub membership, dining in their restaurants and even room rates! | | | | Jumeirah Rotana Hotel: 5* - Business AND Holiday, centrally located
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The Jumeirah Rotana Hotel might not be amongst the most well-known hotels in Dubai, but it has 5 stars and is tucked-away in a very central location... It is located on Diyafah Street, so you are basically a 2-min drive away from the beach, Jumeirah Mosque, etc. A 5-min drive will take you to Mercato Shopping Mall and other shopping destinations & cafes / restaurants along the Jumeirah Beach Road. A mere 10-15 min drive will get you into the heart of town: Bur Dubai, the Dubai Creek, Dubai Museum, etc. You get the picture: you may not be exactly on the beach but you're damn close! (and you may even some a bit of money due to that exact fact!) On their website, you can take a virtual tour of the rooms, pool area, etc. This really is a great little hotel that's suitable for business travellers & holiday makers alike. Some of the hotel's facilities include: > Dial-up Internet Connection. > Transit & Visit Visa arrangements. > Business Centre. > Outdoor Temperature Controlled Pool. > Fully-equipped Health and Fitness Centre. > Car Rental Desk. > 24-hours Currency Exchange.etc. etc. etc..... The service is friendly and professional, and the rooms are up to 5* standards.
The hotel is also the home of one of Dubai's most-loved nightspots: The Boston Bar, one of the greatest places for pub-grub, drinks & a merry, relaxed good time! And there's also one of the only 3 German restaurants in town: The Brauhaus (not very nice food, in my opinion). Don't expect lavish luxury and 5-star service here, but nevertheless the Pearl Residence seems extremely popular with overseas travellers that refuse to fall victim to Dubai's notoriously high hotel prices. I've never stayed here, but I used to live around the corner (so I stopped there and picked-up a brochure for all of you !) and have seen plenty of visitors of all nations and all ages stay here. Some friends of mine have stayed here for a couple of nights & confirmed that it’s very good value for money. You're in the centre of town; close to the Dubai Creek, the traditional Souks/Markets, Bur Juman Shopping Mall and even some nightlife. Finding a taxi is also very easy & convenient in this area, and there's also a supermarket ("Spinney's") nearby for your self-catering needs.
Pearl Residence has 56 One-bedroom apartments (Daily approx. US$ 150 in 2006) and 28 Studio Aparments (Daily approx. US$120 in 2006) each with airconditioning, CCTV, international phone & a safe (click on the picture to see the price list of 2006). There's also high speed access (ADSL) in your room. Daily Housekeeping services, 24-hour coffee shop as well as 24-hour Roomservice is available. You can use the rooftop swimming pool if you don't feel like driving to the beach (approx. 20 min distance by car) or if you're feeling energetic, have a work out in the gym. There are separate steam & sauna rooms for ladies and men. The breakfast is nothing special, but sufficient to fuel your metabolism until you can go elsewhere during the day. There's a small bar with pool tables, video games and juke box, but as you're so centrally located I'd recommend walking to some nearby nightspots, or simply hopping into a taxi and taking a 5-10 min drive to the hotels on Sheikh Zayed Road for a large variety of restaurants, bars & clubs! | | | | Hilton Dubai Creek: Hilton Dubai Creek
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
We loved our hotel in Dubai. As our flights were free (courtesy of a great deal with our AMEX card and BA frequent flyer miles) we decided to spend a bit more than usual on accommodation, opting for the 5 star luxury of the Hilton Dubai Creek. It is not your average Hilton, but a more boutique style hotel, which is located in the central Deira area, by Dubai Creek. We stayed in one of the 'Executive' rooms, which gave us added benefits such as airport transfers, and access to the Executive Lounge - where there was internet, a constant supply of snacks, and happy hour every evening - all included in our room rate. Our hotel room was excellent - a massive, comfortable bed, big marble bathroom, and views along the Creek.
All the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful in an unforced way. There is a small, roof-top pool, where you can relax with a drink or snack and enjoy the views across the city. There is also a health club, though we didn't check it out. The hotel has two restaurants - the Glasshouse Brasserie (where breakfast is served) and Verre, which is Gordon Ramsay's UAE venture, and pretty good too. There are two bars as well - Issimo Martini Bar and the Carbon Lounge, addition to the pool bar. We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 night stay at the Hilton Dubai Creek. Our room was huge and had great views of the Creek. Service from all the staff we came into contact with was first class. Had an excellent meal at Verre. Would definitely stay again. Many tourists like to visit Dubai and for some hotel prices are a bit expensive. There is a good deal by U.A.E. Youth Hostel Association. If they have a vacancy then three days of stay is guaranteed for you, after that you have to check with them if still they can extend your stay. They have hostels in Dubai, Sharjah, Fujeirah and Kourfakkan.
The price for one night per person is about $20 or even less in some hostels. You have to contact them by phone and fax and make sure that you have a confirmed place before coming to Dubai. I leave the contact detail of Dubai hostel, for other emirates contact them and ask the contact details. U.A.E. Youth Hostel Association P.O.Box 94141, Dubai, U.A.E. | | | | Atel Pearl Residence: Good value apartments in Bur Dubai.
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I stayed at the Pearl Residence Hotel Apartments for 8 nights in November 2005 during my third trip to Dubai (and my parents' first trip there). I'd previously stayed at the Orchid Hotel in Deira but this time, with my parents in tow, I wanted to find somewhere with bigger rooms and in a better location. After considerable amounts of time researching on the Internet, I decided that the Pearl Residence apartments looked like the best value for money. In part, this was because the large apartments are spacious enough to accommodate 3 adults, with my parents having the large en-suite bedroom and me having a bed in the enormous living room (with a separate en-suite bathroom) - this worked out considerably cheaper than booking separate double and single rooms elsewhere. The living room is well equipped with satellite TV, comfortable armchairs, a dining table, a coffee table and a very effective air-conditioning system (the air-con in the bedroom and living room are controlled individually). As well as the large living area, master bedroom and two bathrooms, the apartment also had a fully-equipped kitchen with a large fridge freezer, a washing machine, a microwave oven and all necessary cutlery, crockery and drinks making facilities. An excellent breakfast (including a choice of cereals, toast, omelettes, fried eggs, chicken sausages, fried potatoes, baked beans, mushrooms, curry dishes, noodles, fruit and cakes, fruit juices, coffee and tea) was included in the price and the extensive choice varied each day. Maid service is daily, including a change of bed sheets and towels. There is a safe deposit box in the wardrobe in the master bedroom.
There is a bar downstairs with a number of pool tables and games machines, and Internet access is available on a computer terminal in reception for a small charge (10 Dhs for 30 minutes). There is a roof-top swimming pool, sauna, steam bath and gymnasium. The hotel is located in Bur Dubai, just a short walk to the creek and just a short taxi ride to Sheikh Zayed Road. Numerous restaurants and shopping malls including the Bur Juman Centre) are within easy walking distance, while you'll never have any difficulty getting a taxi right outside the entrance - if there isn't already a taxi pulled up waiting outside, you'll be able to signal down a passing one in less than a minute! Not all taxi drivers are familiar with the hotel, so tell them that it's in the "Golden Sands area, opposite Silver Sands 2". Quite often, you'll still have to guide them in after several failed attempts to locate the hotel! The hotel runs a free daily shuttle bus to Jumeirah Public Beach (leaving the hotel at 10:15am and picking up again at the beach at between 2 and 3pm). Even if you're not wanting to swim on the public beach, it's worth taking the free shuttle bus and then jumping in a taxi from there to whichever beach you want to go to (you'll save on the taxi fare that way!). All of the staff were friendly and helpful, although at times they were a little too eager to try and convince us to sign up for an organised safari trip. Be careful in the lifts - if there's more than 2 of you in there, the door WILL try to close before everyone has managed to get out. I nearly got trapped every single time I exited the lift! An excellent choice of accommodation. Clean, spacious studios in a convenient location and relatively inexpensive in a city where budget accommodation is difficult to come by.
